“maximum opacity” products
A new and confident logo is appearing on a number of best-selling products in the Crown Trade range of professional coatings. The new 'Best Finish from Crown Trade' symbol denotes those coatings which offer market leading standards of opacity, coupled with excellent coverage and application properties.
Now packaged in cans bearing the new 'Best Finish from Crown Trade symbol are Crown Trade Covermatt and Matt (white and magnolia) and Full Gloss in white. These products have been put under the microscope in Akzo Nobel's laboratories to measure their opacity characteristics scientifically, and have then gone on to be rigorously tested in full scale application trials to assess their performance in practice.
Each product was bench marked, in a series of blind tests, against its six closest competitors. In the case of Crown Trade Covermatt white and magnolia and Full Gloss white, the original formulations proved to be excellent in terms of opacity. Crown Trade Matt was found to need some slight improvement in the trials and has since been reformulated to ensure that it too offers the very best finish available. Senior brand manager Sally Heppenstall, explains "We have undertaken considerable market research to identify exactly what makes decorators pick one brand rather than another - to rank the importance of factors in their decisions. In a recent survey we questioned a sample of commercial and domestic painting and decorating contractors in detail and asked them to suggest areas where we should spend our research and development activities to best improve our coatings, in recognition of the trade-offs' that have to be made in the real world. It was no surprise to find that quality of finish was identified as one of the most important factors of all. When we dug deeper to find out what actually determined the perception of 'quality, it was confirmed that opacity was more crucial than the next two most important factors coverage and consistency and that this was where decorators wanted us to concentrate our efforts . The responses were clear cut and there was no significant difference between commercial contractors and the domestic specialist at this point. Sally continues: As a direct result of our research we implemented our opacity improvement strategy. Crown Trade Gloss white, Matt Emulsion and Covermatt in white and magnolia now bear the 'Best Finish from Crown Trade' logo, to highlight to customers that they are “maximum opacity” products formulated to deliver optimum obliteration power.

The two distinctive towers of Lizard Lighthouse mark the most southerly point of mainland Britain. Being exposed to a harsh climate and overlooking the sea, redecoration of the lighthouse and former Keepers cottages is a challenging task. The recent programme to refurbish the lighthouse and cottages, which have been converted into holiday accommodation, is using Rubbol Satura wood coating from Sikkens. The work was undertaken, on behalf of Trinity House Lighthouse Service, which was set up by Henry Viii and assumed responsibility for the lighthouse in 1771. Some internal redecoration is under way but the major work is on the outside, where Rubbol Satura is being applied on the external timber. This includes doors and windows frames, cladding and various other detailing where wood is used. The coating has been specified in white and a green colour, specially mixed by Sikkens to match the Trinity House corporate colours. Rubbol Satura is an opaque satin finish which has been specifically formulated to withstand long term exposure. It reduces the effect of chalking and has the added advantage of requiring only one coat to maintain. This is a distinct benefit to the lighthouse maintenance department, due to the size and location of the structure.
"Rubbol Satura was specified for its ability to withstand adverse or intense weather conditions,, says a spokesman for Trinity House. “Being so exposed to salt and spray from the sea, it was imperative that we selected a coating that would not only protect the timber, but give long lasting visual appeal as well. ''So if it's good enough for these extremes it must be ideal for our more sheltered coastal and inland regions.
