Preparation

  • Make sure all surfaces are clean, suitably dry and free from anything which will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied
  • Rub down bare boards with fine abrasives lightly round off all sharp edges. Dust off.
  • Remove all defective decorative coatings by scraping chemical stripping or the use of a hot air stripper as appropriate
  • Wash sound paint with detergent solution to remove dirt and grease. Lightly wet abrade surfaces where necessary. Rinse with clean water to remove all residues. Allow to dry
  • treat any areas affected by mould or algae growth with a Fungicidal wash, taking care to follow the manufacturers instructions.
  • Ensure that all pin, nail and screw heads are sunk well below the surface and make good all surface imperfections with a suitable filler. Allow to dry, Rub down smooth and dust off.
  • Brush Primer well into the surface and primer all edges and backs of boards wherever possible

Good Painting Practice

  • In addition to priming the edges and backs of the boards, its always beneficial to apply an extra coat to end grains wet on wet when these are external boards
  • Ply panels used exrernally should be wbp grade ply t BS6566 part 8 1985
  • Fix panels with non ferrous fixings
  • Where face veneer of ply used externally (gloss painted) has checked /cracked the use of a high textured coating incorporating a scrimming membrane should be considered
  • If the board contains asbestos handle with apprpriate health & safety requirements
  • Do not apply paint coatings externally in wet weather, when air or substrate temperatures willfall below 5°C during wither application or drying. Or when moisture attack is likley to occur before dryig is complete
  • Ideally a minimum of 3 coats should be applied to exterior bare boards and it's as well to remember that some strong finishing colours may require an extra coat to optain the optimum level of opacity
